Sixth Form Curriculum
Sixth Form students at WHSB study three or four A Level subjects (four being recommended). These are taught over two years without AS examinations in Lower Sixth. Students sit a rigorous Internal Examination in May of Lower Sixth to allow them to gauge their progress. Students who begin the Sixth Form with four A Level subjects may discontinue one of them following a formal review if it is in the student’s best interests as judged by the School in consultation with the student and their family.
Details of the subjects offered are given below, together with the details of specifications followed and specific entry criteria.
In addition to A Level studies, all Sixth Form students benefit from a programme of wider education on important issues of relevance (including health, study skills and practical skills for working and domestic life) through assemblies, PSHEE lessons, Form periods and bespoke training events. All Sixth Form students also spend one afternoon each week on activities chosen from a range of sporting, creative, entrepreneurial, academic and community-based options. Volunteering in the local community is actively encouraged and facilitated.
For those who wish to develop their independent learning further, students may enrol for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Dissertation and research project in the Summer of Lower Sixth, with the projects being completed over the course of the Summer holiday and the Autumn Term of Upper Sixth. Weekly support is given to all Upper Sixth students completing EPQs.
Students have an extra opportunity to develop teamwork, organisational and leadership skills through our House system, through mentoring younger pupils, through the organisation of our annual Charity activity programme, as well as through our comprehensive co-curricular programme.
